Prep Time:
30 minutes
Goes with:
Rice or fried Mie noodles

Good to know:

The hotter you fry the tofu, the crispier it will be on the outside and the juicier and creamier it will be on the inside. The sugar from the marinade also forms delicious roasting substances during frying.

Ingredients

2
small pan choi, halved
salt
1
omami Black Pepper Tofu
Char siu sauce:
1 ½ tbsp.
soy sauce
1 tbsp.
vegan 'oyster' sauce
1 tbsp.
hoisin sauce
1 tbsp.
maple syrup
½ tbsp.
sesame oil
2 tbsp.
water
Sweet sauce:
1 tbsp.
light soy sauce
2 tsp.
sesame oil
1 tsp.
sugar or maple syrup

Preparation

  1. Cook the pak choi halves in the contact grill or for 15 minutes at 180°C in the oven in an ovenproof dish. Season lightly with salt.
  2. Mix all the ingredients for the char siu sauce in a bowl and set aside.
  3. Heat the oil in a pan and fry the tofu on all sides over a medium to high heat. Do not turn the tofu until a crust has formed. As soon as the tofu is ready, add the sauce. Brush each side with the sauce until the tofu is shiny and fry again briefly on all sides.
  4. Remove the tofu from the pan and cut into finger-thick slices.
  5. For the sweet sauce, mix the maple syrup and soy sauce with the roasted sesame oil in a bowl, bring to the boil briefly in the pan with the remaining oil and spread over the tofu slices.

Happy omami. Enjoy!
